Adjusting the whole door so it moves evenly and predictably
Balance and alignment is about overall door adjustment. The springs should counter the door's weight so it can be moved by hand without dropping or shooting upward, the cables should lift both sides evenly, and the tracks should guide the rollers in a consistent path. When those relationships drift, the door feels heavy, sits crooked, and wears its hardware and opener faster. KC Garage Doors tests balance by hand, then adjusts spring tension, cable leveling, and track position on doors whose parts are intact but out of adjustment.
- The door drops or rises when stopped halfway
- The door feels heavy or the opener strains
- An uneven gap at the floor on one side
- The door looks crooked while opening or closing
- Rollers rub, bind, or jerk through the curve
- Slack or uneven cables at the bottom corners
The hand-balance test
Balance cannot be judged reliably while the opener is running, because the motor masks how heavy the door really is. We close the door, pull the emergency release, and move the door by hand. A well-balanced door lifts smoothly with modest effort and stays roughly in place when stopped about halfway. It is one of our garage door maintenance services in Santee.
If the door drifts down, the springs are not supplying enough lift. If it climbs on its own, they are supplying too much. We also test at a few positions, because a door can behave differently near the floor, midway, and near the top depending on spring and cable condition.
The test tells us whether the door can be adjusted into balance or whether the springs themselves are worn or incorrectly sized for the door's weight.
What an unbalanced door does to openers, cables, and rollers
A garage door opener is designed to guide a balanced door, not lift dead weight. When springs are weak, the motor, gears, drive chain or belt, rail, and trolley carry extra load on every cycle. That can shorten the opener's service life and lead to force settings being raised to compensate, which undermines the safety reversal. Bent or damaged rails need garage door track repair rather than simple adjustment.
Imbalance also spreads unevenly through the hardware. Cables take more strain, drums and bearings wear, rollers are pushed against one side of the track, and hinges flex. A door that slams the last foot can crack panels and loosen bottom brackets over time.

Call (619) 768-0325Spring tension adjustment
When springs are in good condition but out of adjustment, tension can be corrected. On torsion systems this means securing the door and adding or removing turns with proper winding bars; on extension systems it involves repositioning the spring connection with the door fully opened and secured. Either way, springs store hazardous energy, so the work follows a controlled procedure. A door that will not hold balance may need spring repair.
After each adjustment the hand-balance test is repeated until the door stays put. If the door cannot be balanced within the spring's safe range, or the springs show gaps, stretching, or rust, adjustment is not the right answer. We then recommend spring replacement and point you to our spring repair and torsion spring services.
Cable and drum leveling
Both lift cables must carry equal load so the door rises level. On torsion systems, each cable wraps a drum on the shaft; if one cable is shorter, looser, or sitting off its groove, one side of the door lifts first. The result is a crooked door, an uneven gap at the floor, and extra strain on one side of the hardware.
We check cable tension, position on the drums, and the set screws that hold the drums to the shaft, then level the door so both bottom corners meet the floor together. Frayed or damaged cables are replaced rather than adjusted.
- Equal cable tension on both sides
- Cables seated correctly in drum grooves
- Drum set screws secure
- Door meets the floor evenly
Track plumb, level, and spacing
Alignment also depends on the tracks. Vertical tracks should be plumb and evenly spaced from the door so rollers are neither pinched nor loose. Horizontal tracks should be supported and level side to side, with a smooth transition through the radius. We check mounting brackets and fasteners and adjust track position where parts are intact.
This page is about overall adjustment of a sound door. If a track is bent, dented, kinked, or its brackets are damaged, the right service is track repair, where damaged sections are straightened or replaced. Doors that have already come out of the track need off-track repair.
Uneven gaps at the floor
A gap on one side of the closed door is a common complaint. It may come from unlevel cables, a door that is out of balance, tracks that are not plumb, a sloped slab, or a worn bottom seal. We work through those possibilities in order, correcting the door first and the seal last.
Once balance and alignment are set, we review the opener's close limit and force settings and repeat contact and photo-eye reversal tests. From our Santee location we serve Lakeside, El Cajon, and communities throughout East County and San Diego County, and you receive a free quote before any repair beyond adjustment.
